This project came into my mind long ago, when I was creating a static website for a friend, which took 0,07% of his FTP space he paid for.
I asked him if he was OK with this, but he replied it's fine, he only cared about the site. I felt sorry for the unused capacity.
It came to me during my studies, that if someone created dynamic system that would gather all free space contributed by people, we could create sustainable service for everyone.
Then once a classmate wanted to share her work but didn't know where to put it. So I hosted it on my domain and then decided to create small web-based fileshare for our building.
After few hours I had my first script ready. It was capable of uploading files to server, hide them and return hashed link. As I was finishing it, I asked a friend of mine for graphic help.
I remembered the idea of having fileshare system. In few hours I had the core ready. In another hour I recieved first contributed FTP server and finetuned my script.
On first sight maybe complicated project, but built with sense had fewer than 100 lines.
The first FTP space was lost (which resulted in lost data) and there were issues with hosting, so I got my own server where I can do whatever I want :)
Through refactoring and expanding we achieved todays status - and only thanks to you. |
